Back then orangeries were not built for extra living space but for housing delicate and exotic plants, orange, and other citrus trees in particular. Due to the harsh weather conditions of Northern Europe, these tropical plants required a place that was warm and safe in the colder months. Therefore, the name orangery comes from its early purpose of growing oranges.
